Ellis captures something of the paranoia of a pre-9/11 late 90s and early aughts here where he really moves Spyder Jerusalem into the main political intrigue of the comic. Damaged from the death of the death of Vita Severn, Jerusalem launches into the President Callahan, "The Smiler." There are still bits of world building here, such as Yellena and Channon day away from Spyder, but mostly this moves the comic forward. Darick Robertson's art gets more madcap and someways richer for its grime.

This series is, as my title proclaims, worthy of multiple readings. As if you haven't heard, Spider is an amazing journalist with a knack for telling it like it is, in the most misanthropic but profoundly truthful way possible. By the time you get to this volume, you should be well on your way to needing all ten. I hope you didn't look ahead. This one is worth taking bite-by-bite! You'll be glad you did.

This is the best Transmetropolitan has been since volume 2. Every issue of this volume in this volume is better than the one that came before, all building up to an amazing climax and cliffhanger for volume 7.

Gouge away follows the typical Transmet formula of three single issues, then a three-issue arc. The first issue features 5 different guest artists drawing fantasies of Spider's life. There's a cartoon, a Hallmark movie, a porno, and to daydreams, and they're all hilarious. The second takes us to Spider observing life on the street and writing his column, a welcome return to the backbone of this series. And the third issue is one I've been waiting a while for, a day in the life of Channon and Yelena. The two get a day off while Spider is passed out on drugs, and it's a blast to watch them make the most of it.

All that leads up to the Gouge Away, in which Spider goes after President Callahan with a vengeance. The whole arc is Spider at his finest, with one cathartic conversation after another. I can't wait for the rest of this series.
